Table Printing Control Dialog - Masking Tab

Used to apply modify the output from Bentley Advanced Map Finishing without affecting the actual design file elements. Currently, masking is not displayed on screen, but later upgrades of Bentley Advanced Map Finishing may change this.

In many situations, placing text over other elements is necessary. Unfortunately, this can make the text difficult to read, especially if the text is similar in colour to the elements it covers. Until now, there were only two solutions to this problem.

The first option involves manually breaking or deleting sections of the elements behind the text, which is a time consuming process and physically changes elements in the design file. This can cause errors if any occurrences are missed.

The second option is to place a filled shape under the text to mask the elements below. The filled shape must be the same colour as the background. Problems arise if the filled elements behind the text have a boundary under the text. Invisible elements that are not part of the drawing can appear. The filled shapes must be ordered correctly to work and can mask elements that are not required to be masked.

Table masking is designed to solve these problems by performing the masking in PostScript without making any changes to the design file. The Masking tab allows easy configuration to ensure all required clipping is performed.

Opens when Map Finishing > Table Printing Control > Masking tab is chosen.

SettingDescription
Elements to mask around Defines elements to cause masking for a single line.
Level/Filter Defines the level(s) of the elements to cause masking. Improved selection criteria has been added for Bentley Advanced Map Finishing V8i. Multiple files and levels can be easily chosen from an entry in the table by clicking the Select button. When filter is selected, only elements on the levels in the MicroStation filter are used.
File Defines the file number of elements to be masked around. File 0 is the master file and 1 to 255 are reference file attachments. If reference file attachments are adjusted, table masking may be affected and should always be checked.
Type Specifies the element type used as the mask.
  • Text: Places a mask around the text using the range block of the text as a guide.
  • Text (Natural): Places a mask around the component elements of the text resulting in a much neater appearance for mapping purposes.
  • Cell: Places a mask around the component elements of the cell.
  • Closed Elements: Places a mask around the edges of the closed element.
Mask Size Determines the size of the mask around the element causing the mask as a percentage of text height. A mask size of 100% causes the mask to be the exact size of the text. A mask size of 150% is 1.5 times the height of any masked text.
Elements to be masked Defines the elements to be masked by the elements selected in Elements to mask around. This is only for the current line. Only these element types can be masked: Line, Line String, Complex String, Shape, Complex Shape, B-Spline, Arc, and Ellipse.
Level/Filter Defines the level(s) of the elements to cause masking. Improved selection criteria has been added for Cadastral Mapping Configuration V8i.
Lines/shapes (unfilled) Causes elements without fill to be masked, including the outline of closed shapes with associative patterning.
Fills Causes filled elements to have the fill component masked. This does not include outlines of filled and outline elements.
Patterns/Hatching Causes associative patterning or hatching of an element to be masked.
Outlines of Fill Causes the outline of filled and outlined elements to be masked.
